How we improved our science SPI from less than 0.4 to +1.2 in two years







The Science department at Forest Gate Community School has historically faced challenges in achieving the same level of success as the Maths and English departments. However, we made significant progress last year and, on average, achieved more than a whole grade higher than our national peers.


To accomplish this success, we implemented the following five effective strategies:

  1. We designed a well-structured and challenging Science curriculum.

  2. We changed our teaching approach from block teaching to a more effective method.

  3. We created curriculum booklets that align explicitly with our curriculum plan.

  4. We reduced the amount of teacher talking to improve student engagement.

  5. We adopted Rosenshine's principles of instruction.
